Representing Åland as well

In the 2009 elections for the European Parliament, in which I was elected, the Swedish People's Party cooperated with three parties in the Åland Islands (Centre, Liberals and Frisinnad Samverkan). In the election the Åland candidate Britt Lundberg made a big contribution that helped produce a sufficient number of votes to earn a seat in the European Parliament for our list. As a result of this it is a pleasure and honour for me to represent Åland as well in the European Parliament. As a great friend of Åland, with family roots in Saltvik, this is natural and motivating for me. To support me in this work I have also hired an assistant from Åland. While serving as a Member of the European Parliament I have maintained regular contacts with decision-makers in Åland. This helps ensure that I am up to date with issues that are important for Åland.

Haglund presents Åland flag to Finland's Permanent Representation

Yesterday evening MEP Carl Haglund presented the Åland flag to Finland's Permanent Representation to the EU. This was done on the initiative of Haglund and Elisabeth Nauclér, a member of the Finnish Parliament who is from Åland. The flag was donated by the Åland Government.

"I am glad that Elisabeth drew my attention to the fact that our mission does not have the Åland flag flying outside the building. In the same way as Denmark flies the flags of Greenland and the Faroe Islands outside its representation, Finland's mission should fly the Åland flag," Haglund says.

Haglund presented the Åland flag to Ambassador Jan Store together with his Åland assistant, Wille Valve, with the hope that the flag will soon be raised outside Finland's Permanent Representation to the EU. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs has the final say in the matter.
